Vice President Kashim Shettima has canceled his trip to the 2024 Commonwealth Heads of Government Summit in Samoa.
President Tinubu had appointed Shettima to represent Nigeria at the ongoing event.
The trip was called off after a foreign object struck his plane during a stopover at JFK Airport in New York, as announced by the Presidency in a statement on Thursday night, October 24.
The statement, signed by Tinubu’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mr. Bayo Onanuga, is titled “Cockpit Windscreen of VP Shettima’s Plane Damaged at JFK Airport; Ministerial Delegation to Represent Nigeria at Samoa Commonwealth Summit.”
“Vice President Kashim Shettima’s trip to Samoa for the 2024 Commonwealth Heads of Government Summit has been canceled after a foreign object impacted his plane during a stopover at JFK Airport in New York,” Onanuga stated.
The foreign object caused damage to the plane’s cockpit windscreen.
“President Tinubu acted swiftly by approving a ministerial delegation to represent Nigeria at the summit in Apia, the capital of Samoa, while repairs on the plane are underway.
“The delegation, now tasked with representing Nigeria at the 2024 Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in Samoa, is led by the Minister of Environment, Balarabe Lawal.
The summit commenced on October 21 and will conclude on October 26.
