“Moon not sighted in Nigeria, fasting to continue” – Sultan of Sokoto reveals

The Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), headed by the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, has declared that fasting may extend to Sunday, March 30, 2025, as the moon indicating the end of Ramadan has not yet been observed in Nigeria.

In a statement from NSCIA’s Secretary-General, Prof. Is-haq Oloyede, released on Saturday, the council called on Muslims to look for the Shawwal crescent on the 29th day of Ramadan.

Should the moon be sighted following proper verification procedures, the Sultan will formally declare Sunday, March 30, 2025, as the first day of Shawwal and the celebration of Eid-el-Fitr.

The statement read:

“If Muslims sight the crescent in accordance with the moon sighting and verification standards, then His Eminence will declare Sunday, 30 March 2025, as the 1st of Shawwal and the day of Eid ul-Fitr.”

The announcement comes after Saudi Arabia declared Sunday, March 30, 2025, as Eid-el-Fitr.
