French media powerhouse Canal+ has completed its $3 billion acquisition of MultiChoice Group, securing full ownership of major African entertainment platforms including DStv, GOtv, Showmax, and SuperSport.
The landmark deal, approved by South Africa’s Competition Tribunal, comes with key conditions: no job losses for at least three years, increased investment in local content, and the establishment of a new South African-owned entity, LicenceCo, to hold broadcasting licenses.
This merger marks a significant shift in the African media landscape, uniting Canal+’s French-speaking audience with MultiChoice’s stronghold in English-speaking markets across the continent.
