Strike: FG Threatens ASUU With No-Work-No-Pay

The Federal Government of Nigeria has issued a stern warning to the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), threatening to invoke the “N𝐨-𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤-𝐧𝐨-𝐩𝐚𝐲” policy if the union proceeds with its proposed strike action.

This development has reignited debates around the sustainability of Nigeria’s higher education system and the recurring friction between academic unions and the government.

Government’s Position

In a joint statement released by the Federal Ministry of Education on October 12, 2025, Ministers Maruf Tunji Alausa and Suwaiba Sai’d Ahmed emphasized that the government has shown “demonstrable sincerity, patience, and goodwill” in addressing ASUU’s concerns.

They cited improvements such as increased teaching allowances and better conditions of service for academic staff. However, they warned that any disruption of academic activities would trigger the enforcement of the N𝐨-𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤-𝐧𝐨-𝐩𝐚𝐲 rule.

ASUU’s Grievances

ASUU has long been vocal about issues including underfunding of universities, delayed salaries, and lack of autonomy in university governance.

While the government claims that most of these concerns have been addressed, ASUU argues that deeper structural reforms are still needed. The union had announced plans for a two-week warning strike, prompting the government’s latest response⁽²⁾.

Implications for Students and Institutions

If the strike proceeds, students across Nigeria’s public universities may face yet another disruption in their academic calendar. This could further erode confidence in the public education system and widen the gap between public and private institutions. The no-work-no-pay policy, while intended to deter industrial action, may also deepen mistrust between educators and policymakers.
