Manchester United have turned down the chance to send Harry Maguire to Barcelona as part of a deal for Frenkie de Jong.
Erik ten Hag is desperate to add De Jong, who he worked with at Ajax, to his Red Devils squad ahead of his first campaign in charge.
And according to the Sun, Barca were keen on a player-plus-cash transfer with Maguire their preferred target.
The England international has endured a mixed time at Old Trafford and struggled badly for long periods last term.
But Ten Hag is keen to work with Maguire, 29, and help him rediscover the form that saw United splash £80million on him only three years ago.
That means Old Trafford chiefs will have to meet Barca’s £69m asking price if they do want to land 25-year-old Netherlands international De Jong, though talks are said to be progressing well between the clubs.
However, an alternative Sun report claims that Ten Hag may only have £100m to spend as he bids to reshape his group.
With reports linking Ajax duo Antony and Jurrien Timber to the club persisting, it remains to be seen whether the new boss will be able to secure all of his key targets this summer.
