Tinubu Steps Down as ECOWAS Chair, Sierra Leone’s Julius Bio Elected

Julius Bio

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has elected Julius Bio, the president of Sierra Leone, as its chairman. He succeeds President Bola Tinubu, who served as the bloc’s chair for the previous two years.

During the 67th ordinary session of the authority, which was convened in Abuja on Sunday, Tinubu was succeeded by the president of Sierra Leone.

President Tinubu was re-elected in Abuja one year after being elected to the office in Guinea-Bissau on July 9, 2023.

His chairmanship was challenged with the burden of restoring democracy in the region after Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso pulled out of the bloc following their coups.

Following his election, Julius Bio promised to prioritize restoring constitutional order and deepening democracy in the fragmented region.

He also named revitalising regional security cooperation, unlocking economic integration, and building institutional credibility as his key priorities.
