[Sport] Premier League Player of the Month nominees for March announced

The Premier League’s Player of the Month candidates for March have been announced.

The shortlist consists of eight players who have stood out in English football’s top-flight over the last month.

Andreas Christensen – Chelsea

Andreas Christensen, probably the biggest underdog for the honor, has been reintroduced to the Chelsea side since Thomas Tuchel’s arrival and has been outstanding.

The center-back played all four of the Blues’ league games in March, holding clean sheets against Liverpool, Everton, Leeds United, and Sheffield United.

Kelechi Iheanacho – Leicester City

Leicester’s recent injury crisis could have easily resulted in a disastrous failure, but Kelechi Iheanacho has played a vital role in averting that.

In March, the Nigerian scored in all of the Foxes’ games. He started with a thunderous volley to equalize at Turf Moor and then added another equalizer against Brighton.

But it was in their final league game that he shone the brightest. Iheanacho scored a hat-trick in a 5-0 thrashing of Sheffield United, who were without their boss.

Harry Kane – Tottenham Hotspur

Even though Tottenham has had a tough month, Harry Kane has maintained his high expectations.

In the last month, the England captain has scored three goals and provided two assists, including an absolute screamer against Crystal Palace. He finished March as the Premier League’s top scorer and assist maker, making him a strong contender for the PFA Player of the Year award.

Jesse Lingard – West Ham United

Lingard is nominated for the second month in a row, after missing out last month to Gundogan.

While only appearing in two games this month, the Hammers’ midfielder shone once more. He scored the game’s first goal in a 2-0 win over Leeds and added a goal and an assist in a dramatic 3-3 draw with Arsenal. After an 18-month absence, his performance secured him a recall to the England national team.

Riyad Mahrez – Manchester City

The competition for places at Man City is fierce, but Riyad Mahrez can count on daily minutes if he keeps up his current style.

In March, the winger scored three goals in as many games, including a brace against Southampton and a goal against Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Illan Meslier – Leeds United

Leeds goalkeeper Illan Meslier is another outsider for the distinction.

This season, the 21-year-old has flown under the radar a bit, but he’s put in some strong performances. In the 0-0 draw at home to Chelsea, he was named man of the match, and in the 2-1 victory at Craven Cottage, he made five saves.

Luke Shaw – Manchester United

Shaw’s chances of making Gareth Southgate’s Euro 2020 squad looked slim at the start of the season. Only a few months, he’s arguably one of the team’s first faces on the roster.

During March, Shaw was part of a backline that had three clean sheets out of three in the season. In addition, the left-back scored the second goal in United’s 2-0 victory over bitter rivals Man City on the road.

Leandro Trossard – Brighton and Hove Albion

Brighton’s Leandro Trossard completes the shortlist.

Trossard was instrumental in the Seagulls gaining six crucial points in their battle against relegation. The Belgian scored the game-winning goal against Southampton and had a goal and an assist in Newcastle United’s 3-0 victory.
