Speaking on Monday Night Football, Jamie Carragher has said that he doesn’t believe Arsenal winger Nicolas Pepe will ever be good enough for Mikel Arteta’s side.
Pepe joined Arsenal from Lille two years ago for a club-record fee, but he has struggled to establish himself in the first team.
During his time in North London, the Ivorian has shown flashes of brilliance, but his consistency has been questioned. Pepe has already been publicly chastised by Arteta during his time in charge, and the next few months may be pivotal in his Arsenal career.
Pepe got off to a decent start in 2021, starting on the left side.
But he has steadily lost favor again, and he had a poor performance for Arsenal in their 3-0 loss to Liverpool.
Arsenal will have to give up on Pepe, according to Carragher, because he would never make it for them.
“Nicolas Pepe, the thing with him is not so much age, he’s just not good enough and he’s never going to be good enough,” the Sky pundit said.
Carragher’s assessment may seem harsh, but Pepe has had enough time to adjust to be revealing more now.
Emile Smith Rowe and Bukayo Saka, for example, are now having much more influence in advanced areas than he has ever had, and it’s possible that Arsenal will cut their losses on the winger this summer and write him off as a poor buy.
