It was another time United have failed at the semi-final stage of competition under Solskjaer and according to the Norwegian in his post-match interview, it was disappointing to see his side concede from set-plays.

Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer admitted that his side was not good enough as they were denied an EFL final slot by neighbours Man City.

“Manchester City can score many great goals. You can accept that. When you concede two simple set-plays, it’s very disappointing. Just not good enough in those moments.

“We didn’t create enough big chances. They didn’t either. We didn’t have the extra finesse we’ve had in the games lately. We weren’t good enough today. We played against a very good Manchester City team. They played well. When they play well you have to play very well to beat them. We were just lacking that little bit,” Solskjaer told Sky Sports after the game.

The result means Manchester United has now crashed out of each of the last four cup competitions at the semi-final stage.

Attention for United now shifts to the FA Cup where they are scheduled to take on Championship side Watford on Saturday 9 January.
