[Sport] Arsenal 1-1 Fulham: Gunners snatch late draw at home against resilient Fulham

Eddie Nketiah stepped off the bench to score a late goal and salvage a point for Arsenal as they settled for a 1-1 draw at home to Fulham on Sunday evening.

Josh Maja’s goal from the spot in the second half seemed enough to settle the tie but were pegged back deep in stoppage time to share the spoils.

The Gunners were the better side for long spells and could have taken a seventh-minute lead but Gabriel Martinelli was denied by Alphonse Areola.

The match though was devoid of open chances in the first half, even though the Gunners had a goal disallowed for offside in the 40th minute after a lengthy VAR review.

Arsenal came back for the second period with real intent, and Alexandre Lacazette came closest to finding the first goal with a ferocious shot that went inches wide.

It was the visitors though who took the lead in the 56th minute, and it came from the spot after a foul from Gabriel.

Maja then won the battle of wills, sending an unstoppable penalty past Mathew Ryan into the top left corner.

Hector Bellerin then squandered a promising opportunity in the 67th minute as he latched on to a perfect cross from the wing, but his bullet header from around the penalty spot went just wide of the right post.

Areola then pulled off a glorious save to deny Nicolas Pepe after a precise lofted cross into the box.

Bukayo Saka and Martinelli came close late on, but it was Nketiah who delivered with the all-important equaliser in the 97th minute, sneaking behind the defense to tap home.

The draw means Arsenal remain ninth on the table with 46 points, while Fulham are 18th on 27 points.
