Ajax secured the Dutch Eredivisie league title for the 35th time on Sunday, defeating Emmen 4-0, despite police warnings not to celebrate outside the Johan Cruyff Arena.

Before full-time, Amsterdam police advised fans not to go to the stadium because the surrounding streets were already congested.

Thousands of fans outside the venue, which was vacant due to coronavirus lockdown measures, were celebrating the title even before the final whistle, setting off red flares and fireworks.

Jurrien Timber, Sebastien Haller, Devyne Rensch, and Davy Klaassen scored as Ajax defeated Emmen to win the Eredivisie title with three games remaining.

The win gave the Amsterdam powerhouse its second domestic league and cup double in three seasons, and it came just two days after coach Erik ten Hag extended his contract, despite rumors that he could replace the fired Jose Mourinho at Tottenham in the Premier League.

“It’s a great moment. It’s a shame the stadium is not full,” captain Dusan Tadic told ESPN.

He said reaching the quarterfinals of the Europa League, where Ajax lost to Roma, was also an achievement, “but we are Ajax and we want more.”

Following celebrations in the vacant Johan Cruyff Arena, the players made their way to the stadium’s elevated parking lot to show off the season’s two trophies to thousands of cheering fans below, largely ignoring social distancing rules as smoke from dozens of flares filled the air.
