Orphanage Bemoans Donation Of Expired Items From Nigerians

An orphanage in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Honour Ground Home, says lives of orphans in its care has been continuously put at risk by Nigerians who donate expired food items to it.

The head of the orphanage, Blessing Ijenwa, described the action of the donors as heartbreaking.

Speaking while while receiving food items from an association on Sunday, she said children became sick after consuming such item, adding that the they felt despondent when they received expired item from selfless Nigerians.

“These children cry and feel sad when they receive expired or bad food items from well meaning Nigerians, it’s heartbreaking,” the head of the orphanage, Blessing Ijenwa, said.

Ijenwa, who said the orphanage appreciated the donations, said it was crucial to point out that expired and spoilt foods were detrimental to the children’s health.

She pleaded with citizens to visit orphanages regularly to give orphans a sense of belonging in the society.

A 19-year-old at the orphanage, Janice, said the orphanage had not received food items from citizens for a long time, which she attributed to the location of the home.

While speaking on the bad quality of food donated to the orphanage by some citizens, she said it was possible the donors were not aware of the state of the items donated.

“To them they might think it is good for consumption but we pray God still blesses them,” she said.
