Five Nigerian-founded fintech companies, PalmPay, Moniepoint, OPay, Piggyvest, and Interswitch, have earned spots on the prestigious list of the world’s top 300 fintech firms of 2025, published by CNBC in partnership with Statista.
The ranking, unveiled this week, recognised global fintech leaders based on several key performance indicators, including revenue, employee count, and operational growth. Companies were selected following in-depth desk research by Statista, along with editorial input from CNBC.
Four of the Nigerian fintechs, PalmPay, Moniepoint, OPay, and Interswitch, were listed under the Payments category, which focuses on providers of digital transaction services, payment gateways, and related platforms that bridge financial access for individuals and businesses.
Piggyvest was featured under the Wealth Tech category, comprising firms offering investment tools, trading platforms, and digital asset management solutions.
Despite Nigeria’s growing fintech ecosystem, with over 200 companies, only four firms (not counting Moniepoint, which is legally incorporated in the UK) were recognized, making Nigeria one of the least represented countries on the list. The United States led with 126 companies, followed by the United Kingdom (38) and Singapore (16).
Reactions from Nigerian fintechs
PalmPay, which serves over 35 million registered users and records 15 million daily transactions, hailed the recognition as a validation of its mission to drive financial inclusion in emerging markets.
“To be recognised as one of the world’s top fintech companies by CNBC and Statista is a powerful affirmation of our mission to build a more inclusive financial system.
“As we scale PalmPay to more emerging markets, including Tanzania and Bangladesh, our focus remains on closing financial access gaps for everyday consumers and businesses,” said Sofia Zab, Founding Chief Marketing Officer of PalmPay.
Moniepoint Inc, whose group headquarters are in the UK, also issued a statement via its Group CEO, Tosin Eniolorunda:
“It is an honour to be named as one of the world’s top fintech companies by CNBC. Moniepoint’s inclusion in this prestigious, authoritative list is a testament to the hard work and success of the entire team while highlighting our emergence as a key player shaping the future of fintech worldwide.”
