An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 6.1 rattled the island nation of Cyprus on Tuesday morning, January 11, the country’s Geological Survey Department said.
Although no damage or injuries have so far been reported, the earthquake was felt throughout the east Mediterranean region, and reports said it was felt in nearby Israel, Lebanon and Turkey.
A video on social media shows a group of Nigerian residents panicking over the situation.
They trooped out of their homes and expressed fears, saying that they can’t wait to leave the country for their safety.
The powerful tremor struck at 3:08 a.m. (0108GMT) and its epicenter was 50 kilometers (31 miles) off the island’s western coastline at a depth of 25 kilometers (15.5 miles), ABC news reports.
The quake shook some out of their beds, especially in the island’s western district of Paphos where it was felt most strongly.
