Nigerian Nurses Suspend Strike After Government Promises Timely Implementation of Demands

Nigerian Nurses Suspend Strike After Government Reaches Agreement

LAGOS, Aug 2 (EmeraldLoaded) – Nurses working in Nigeria’s public hospitals have called off their seven-day warning strike after successfully reaching an agreement with the federal government to address their demands.

The National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives (NANNM) confirmed in a statement that the government has responded positively, providing clear timelines for the implementation of their requests. However, the union stressed that they will closely monitor the government’s adherence to the signed memorandum of understanding (MoU).

The strike began on July 30, with nurses threatening to escalate to an indefinite strike if their demands—including increased pay, improved working conditions, and more recruitment—were not met within the week.

Representatives from the government, including the Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Ali Pate, and Labour and Employment Minister Muhammad Dingyadi, held a crucial meeting with the nurses’ union on Friday. Following the meeting, Minister Pate announced the suspension of the strike and pledged the government’s commitment to resolving the nurses’ concerns.

Importantly, the meeting concluded with an agreement that no nurse who participated in the strike would face any punishment or sanctions from the government.
