Thirteen miners lost their lives in a tragic mining site collapse in Plateau State, Nigeria, highlighting concerns over mining safety and regulations.

On Monday, Joshua Riti, chairman of the LGA, briefed journalists about Saturday’s incident, which led to a significant loss of life.

Riti expressed profound sadness over the tragedy, revealing that seven of the victims were from Bassa LGA.

The ill-fated mining site is situated near the borders of Bassa, Jos South, and Jos North LGAs.

“This is an unfortunate incident, these young people were only out in search of a means of livelihood,” NAN quoted Riti as saying.

“They went out to put their energies to good use to sustain and meet up with the current economic hardship in the country but met their untimely death.”

“I wish to extend my deepest condolences to the families and loved ones affected by this tragedy.”

NAN reported that most victims were young individuals, mainly between 18 and 30 years old.

In a separate incident in July, a two-storey Saint Academy school building in Jos North LGA’s Busa Buji community collapsed during exams, trapping students and teachers inside .
