Italian who beat Nigerian to death sentenced to 24 years in prison

In July 2022, Filippo Ferlazzo, an Italian citizen, was sentenced to 24 years in prison for the killing of Alika Ogorchukwu, a Nigerian man based in Italy.

The news was confirmed by Abike Dabiri-Erewa, the Chairman of Nigerians in Diaspora Commission, in a statement released on Thursday.

Dabiri-Erewa also expressed appreciation to the Nigerian Mission in Rome for their dedication in pursuing this case and other cases involving Nigerians. The statement was signed by Gabriel Odu, the spokesperson for NiDCOM.

She said, “I am glad that this case finally got justice. Like I always say, there have to be consequences for actions”.

Alika Ogorchukwu, a street vendor, was brutally attacked on July 29, 2022, in broad daylight while selling his goods. The assailant used Ogorchukwu’s own crutches to beat him to death, in front of several bystanders who did not intervene. Shockingly, some onlookers recorded videos of the attack on their smartphones.

The following day, July 30, 2022, Ferlazzo was arrested for the murder of Ogorchukwu, as well as for stealing his phone. According to the Italian Police, it is believed that Ferlazzo attacked Ogorchukwu after an altercation where Ogorchukwu asked Ferlazzo’s girlfriend to buy a handkerchief.

The tragic incident occurred at 2 p.m. on Friday in the main central street of Civitanova Marche, Italy. Paramedics discovered Ogorchukwu’s lifeless body at the scene.
