Inmates reportedly attack Abba Kyari in prison

Suspended Deputy Commissioner of Police, Abba Kyari has reportedly escaped an attempt on his life by inmates at the Kuje Correctional Facility, Abuja.

Premium Times reports that prison authorities have commenced plans for Kyari to be transferred out of Kuje prison to the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS).

Sources revealed that Kyari was attacked by aggrieved inmates, who accused him of not honouring his bribe-for-release deals when he was in active service.

The publication said that the last attack on the former head of Intelligence Response Team occurred on May 4. He was attacked by about 190 inmates who are mostly in prison for drug-related offences.

The attackers claimed the suspended DCP prosecuted them despite taking bribes from them.

One of the sources quoted the inmates, as saying Kyari was “eliminating smaller (drug) dealers to clear the field for Afam Ukatu,” a suspected billionaire drug baron allegedly behind N3 billion Tramadol deal linked to Kyari.

“Inmates claimed that upon arrest, Abba Kyari demanded bribes to kill the case, then still prosecuted them”

“Regardless of the level of protection, they vowed to get him. The inmates have given him an ultimatum to return all he extorted from them or be killed,” a source told Premium Times.

“Relevant officials have assessed that he will be killed or badly injured if he continues to be remanded in Kuje,” the source added.

It was also learnt that an official recommendation has been made for Kyari to be transferred to a DSS facility.
