“Silent Killers: Hypertension and Diabetes Are Spreading Fast in Nigeria – Doctors Warn”

Lagos, August 6, 2025 — Medical professionals across Nigeria are sounding the alarm over the rapid rise of non-communicable diseases, particularly hypertension and type 2 diabetes, calling them the country’s “silent killers.”

A new report from the Nigerian Medical Association reveals that over 30% of adults over 35 are living with high blood pressure, while nearly 10 million Nigerians are pre-diabetic — many unaware of their condition.

“People walk around with dangerously high blood pressure and don’t even know it,” said Dr. Ifeoma Nwosu, a cardiologist in Abuja. “These diseases develop quietly and only show symptoms after serious damage has occurred.”

Factors such as poor diet, lack of physical activity, urban stress, and self-medication are making matters worse. Health experts are urging the government to launch a national health screening program and to make treatment more affordable.

Meanwhile, citizens are advised to check their blood pressure regularly, reduce salt and sugar intake, and stay active. Early detection and lifestyle changes can significantly reduce the risk of complications like heart failure, kidney damage, and stroke.
