Exposed: Customs Seizes N4.2bn Donkey Skins, Smuggled Goods in Lagos

The Federal Operations Unit (FOU), Zone ‘A’ of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), has intercepted a container carrying 4,410 pieces of donkey skins worth N4.235 billion, in violation of international wildlife trade laws.

FOU Comptroller Kola Oladeji, speaking in Lagos, said the seized consignment breached the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES), adding that over 4,000 donkeys were illegally slaughtered.

Beyond the donkey skins, Customs operatives also confiscated smuggled vehicles, foreign rice, cannabis, frozen poultry, and second-hand clothing, with a combined value running into billions of naira.

Six suspects were arrested in connection with the seizures, with some released on administrative bail as investigations continue.
