Benue: Bandits abduct policeman, two others, demand N1.7m ransom

Three persons have beeen abducted by rampaging bandits along the Naka-Makurdi road in Nigeria’s middle belt state of Benue

They were kidnapped on Tuesday at 4 pm while returning from a burial at Ahume. Among the abducted persons is a police officer.

A source said the kidnappers took their victims to an unidentified location before getting in touch with their relatives and demanding N1.7 million.

Andrew Ayande, the chairman of the Gwer West local government, confirmed the incident. He disclosed that the neighbourhood had a history of crime.

According to him: “This incident happened yesterday (Tuesday). You know, we lost one prominent person around the place a day before yesterday (Monday), and they took the corpse home yesterday (Tuesday). The people (hoodlums) came as usual, as they have been doing, and they attacked the people in one of the vehicles.

“A policeman and two others were kidnapped around Ahume at about 4 pm. The vehicle the victims were in has been taken to Naka police station.”
