Armed herders attack Benue village, kill 5

Gunmen suspected to be herders have attacked Apa Local Goverment Area of Benue State and killed at least five persons.

A local, who identified himself as Adaji, said the incident happened in Adija village on Sunday.

He disclosed that most of those killed and injured were youths.

Adaji said that the bandits stormed the community and shot indiscriminately at people.

The leader of the cultural group in the council, Apa Development Association, Eche Akpoko, confirmed the incident.

He said that five youths were missing, adding that three bodies had been recovered.

He disclosed that the assailants, who were lurking in the bushes and forests have surrounded the villages, and attack the hapless villages whenever they want.

“I can describe it as routine attack, it’s true the armed herders attacked the community on Sunday and five youths were missing and as we speak, they have been able to recover three bodies and two are yet to be found.

“For the people at the LG, the truth of the matter is that they are helpless and they are perplexed over the whole thing especially that they are not seeing government’s action visibly.

“The people (attackers ) are around the places there; they are in the bush, in the forest around and they strike anytime they want. It’s very sad.” he said

Also, chairman of the local government, Ochayi Alidu, who confirmed the attack, saying, “At first, two bodies were found. And the other three missing persons were found on Monday to make it five.”
