The National Chairman of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Chief Ralphs Okey Nwosu, has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to listen to the concerns of protesting Nigerians and take immediate action to address the economic hardship affecting the country.
During an appearance on the AIT Television morning program, Nwosu criticized the federal government’s economic policies under Tinubu, describing them as “suffocating” for Nigerians. He urged the President to adopt a more proactive approach to tackle the ongoing challenges.
Nwosu argued that if the resources the federal government is spending on trying to suppress the protests and providing palliatives were better allocated, they could significantly alleviate hunger and suffering in the country.
“How do we deal with our issues? Proactiveness is critical to leadership. The President should be proactive. Moving forward, I wish we could be more proactive. Nigerians came out and spoke; people died, a lot of people are dying on the street, go to the mortuary, people are filled there, people cannot pay for their bills, so the President should listen to Nigerians,” he said.
He urged the All Progressives Congress (APC)-led government to prioritize wealth creation for the citizens and avoid implementing policies that could cripple the nation.
Nwosu also expressed disappointment with the opposition’s failure to effectively check the APC government’s excesses. He called on opposition political party leaders to rise and hold the government accountable.
The ADC chairman’s comments come amid a ten-day protest organized by the #EndBadGovernance movement, which began on August 1st. The protesters are demanding a reversal of the removal of the fuel subsidy, a reduction in the cost of governance, and other measures to alleviate Nigerians’ suffering.
Nwosu criticized the APC-led federal government’s efforts to stifle the protests, calling it undemocratic for any democratic government to prevent its citizens from protesting against bad policies.
