Barcelona 1-2 Real Madrid: Carlo Ancelotti’s side win first Elclasico of the season

Real Madrid won the first installment of this season’s El Clasico at Camp Nou on Sunday evening, beating sworn enemies Barcelona 2-1.

David Alaba gave the visitors the lead with his first goal in the league, before Lucas Vasquez’s strike and a late, late Sergio Aguero goal settled the match.

In a match that lacked the usual attacking threat, it was the visitors – who came into the match as favourites – who threatened first in the 21st minute.

A fine team move ended when Vinicius Junior went down under a challenge in the box, but the ref immediately waved away the appeals from all players.

Barcelona tried to hit back almost immediately when Sergino Dest found space inside the box to shoot after collecting a short pass, but it was a wasted effort as it flew high over the bar.

Just after the half-hour mark, Carlo Ancelotti’s side took the lead when Alaba managed to find some space just outside the penalty area after exchanging the ball with Vinicius Jr and hammered a shot towards goal, and it found the back of the net.

Pique almost equalised in the 35th minute with a dangerous towering header from around the penalty spot but it went wide of the left post.

A clever block then denied Ansu Fati in the dying minutes of the first half as the visitors managed to keep the hosts at bay.

The second half was a copy of the first, with Madrid doing all they could to protect their lead.

Both sides threatened from time to time, with Federico Valverde coming close to doubling Madrid’s lead

With Alaba’s goal seemingly settling the match, Vazquez reacted quickest to stab home a rebound in the 93rd minute to double Madrid’s lead.

Sergio Aguero then scored a consolation for the hosts with his first goal in a Barcelona shirt.
